Designing a passionate life with balance includes writing down all the ya-buts that come up after you identify your passions. After you identify what you absolutely love and what makes your heart sing, often the self-doubt arises. Your self-doubt can arise in a variety of ways but one common way is what I call the choir or those voices in your head that just won't stop listing all of the reasons why following your passions won't work. There are usually two sides to the chatter, the voice coming from your heart that states all of the reasons why it's a good idea. Then there is the negative choir made up of multiple voices of naysayers. These voices are often a combination of your own self-doubts as well as the doubts of family members and friends.
One way to diminish the power of the negative choir is to write down the thoughts of both sides of the argument on paper. On a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle of the page. On the left side of the line, write "My Heart's Desire" on the right side of the line at the top of the column write "Naysayers". Start by writing the statement from your heart in the left column. Wait for the naysayers input and write it down in the Naysayers column. Notice how you feel as you write down the Naysayers comment. Continue this process until you have everything that you've ever heard from both sets of voices and then stop. The very act of writing the arguments down from the naysayers begins to diminish their power over you.
How did you feel as you wrote down both sides of the arguments? Can you identify where some of the naysayer arguments came from? Are they yours or someone else's? Are they true? Can you absolutely know that they are true?
This information is invaluable to you as you continue to follow your passions. Many of the thoughts you wrote down from the naysayers are probably limiting beliefs that you carry with you. When these limiting beliefs pop into your head, you can use Byron Katie, The Sedona Method or EFT to work on eliminating them so that you can move forward.
The information in your heart's desire column is also good information for you. Write down these thoughts on cards and post them where you can see them. Refer to this list when you run into an obstacle or the self-doubts start to creep in and remind yourself as to why you are following your passions.
