Designing a passionate life includes a clear understanding of your purpose. When you live with passion and purpose your life becomes fun and fulfilling. I believe that your passions are the clues to your purpose. Use your passions to lead you to your purpose. When you know what you are passionate about it's easier to get clear about your purpose. Your passions and purpose both arise from your heart. It's important to go within when doing this exercise.
Here's a simple exercise to begin the process of uncovering your purpose. I call it uncovering your purpose because more than likely you have been unconsciously living aspects of your purpose all of your life. Now by creating a purpose statement you are going to bring it into your consciousness and live on purpose. Make sure to give yourself some time and a quiet space when you do this exercise. I would suggest a short meditation before you start the process. Be sure you have paper or a journal with you to write down your answers.
The Exercise
- Write down your number one passion
- Spend a moment and visualize yourself living that passion completely. Really let it sink into your heart. Then ask yourself: What are the two qualities about me that my passion lets me express?
- What are two ways that I can see myself sharing these qualities with others? What would the form of sharing these qualities look like? Let your imagination go wild. Don't filter your answers.
- If it was a perfect world, what would it look like and feel like?
The Statement
Using the information you wrote down as a result of the exercise, create your purpose statement by using this format: As I live my [insert passion here] I express my [insert quality 1] and [insert quality 2] to [insert way 1] and [insert way 2] to the world to [insert what the world would look like here].
For example: As I live my passion for cleaning up the planet, I express my compassion and joy with people I inspire and teach about how to go green resulting in a healthy and peaceful planet.
This is one way to put together your purpose statement but it isn't the only way. Play with what comes up for you and create a purpose statement that works for you. Keep it simple. You want to create the essence of your purpose, not a list of all of the qualities you want to express and things you want to do.
After you write your purpose statement, say it out loud and see how it feels. Rewrite it until it feels right to you. Remember this is your purpose statement, not someone else's. There is no right or wrong purpose statement.
I would love to see your purpose statement. Please click 'Comment' below and share your purpose statement on the blog. If that doesn't feel right, please feel free to comment on this post. Let's dialog.
